Mama Maria & Sister Elouise

Mama Maria (1856 - 1945), as known to her kids, grandkids and great grandkids was born in Tuscany, Italy in the Fall of 1856. The daughter of a farmer, Mama learned an appreciation for fresh, crisp vegetables at a very early age.

She would go on to meet and marry a ship builder at the age of 18, but always made sure she had her perfect garden. Thirteen children later (11 boys and 2 girls) Mama Maria’s garden grew to be a full time job. Everyday she and the girls would pick fresh vegetables and every night when the boys got home - fresh salad, sandwiches and yes... tomato and cheese-covered bread with fresh toppings later to be known as pizza would be served.

Mama made it to the “new world” in the Fall of 1927 for her granddaughter’s wedding; landing in New York. She would spend her days at Yankee stadium where she witnessed the Babe hit his 60th homerun of the season, and her nights would be spent doing what she loved best... cooking. These recipes are hers and those of her daughters, grand-daughters and great grand-daughters. And OH! one other thing... she never left New York.

Neither have you!
